Rise Against Hunger
For the past three years, SFUU has partnered with two other local faith communities for an interfaith, inter-generational opportunity for service through a Rise Against Hunger event in the fall! We join together at Bethlehem Lutheran Church to package over 10,000 meals for distribution to hungry people around the world. All supplies needed are provided (each faith community pays a third of the cost for this event - with thanks for you generous donations). On the day of the event we just show up, put on the hair net they provide, divide into teams, and get to work.
The 2023 Rise Against Hunger interfaith group gathered in front of the more than 10,000 nutritious meals they packaged in just 2 hours - good work team!!!
Rise Against Hunger - November 12, 2023
SFUU teamed up with Bethlehem Lutheran and 1st Congregational Church of Auburn to package over 10,000 meals in this service event. 28 members (and friends) of SFUU showed up for the effort. The Social Justice team thanks all of you who worked the event and/or donated to the cause through our Share-the-Plate program! The meals that we packaged are targeted for remote, last-mile communities within hunger pockets designated “serious” or higher on the Global Hunger Index.
On January 4th (2024) Rise Against Hunger sent a thank you e-mail and indicated that meals we helped to package were delivered to the Philippines!
The Philippines consists of over 7,000 islands in the Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean. One of the most environmentally disaster prone countries in the world, it faces near constant threats of natural disasters like earthquakes, typhoons and volcanic eruptions. These disasters cause displacement and major loss of livelihoods and infrastructure, and disproportionately affect poor communities in rural areas, where people rely on agriculture and fishing. The Global Hunger Index, which assesses food insecurity based on indicators that measure undernourishment and under-nutrition, categorizes the Philippines as having a “moderate” level of hunger overall. Rise Against Hunger serves the regions of the Philippines where hunger is most urgent.
